The Perfect Day in Playa del Carmen – Ruins, Beach & Breakie

Oh, the Perfect Playa del Carmen Day! There are so many perfect days in Playa del Carmen but just recently we really had a perfect day! In A nut shell it was a lot of walking (get that FitBit on!) beach time and a great breakfast! Playa del Carmen is one of the fastest growing cities in the Riviera Maya so this Perfect Day just touches on some of the things you can do in this beachside town.

Start the day off with a great coffee and a walk

Ah Cacoa is a local favorite for morning coffee. They open at 7 am so early birds can catch the ‘coffee’ worm! There are three locations so no matter where you are staying there is an Ah Cacao close by. We popped into the new location at 38th and th and grabbed a latte to go. Then we headed down th Ave to the south with the intention to walk¬† 5 kms this morning. 5th Ave is in full shade from 6 am to 830 am (up to 930 am in the winter months) so take advantage of being out of the sun. Walk south to the end of 5th Ave with a natural turnaround happening in the outdoor mall before you enter Playacar. Head north and just take in the morning rituals of many runners, shop keepers and the juice men that sell natural juices from their bicycles. Your walk should take you about 50 minutes and provides a great overview of this pedestrian street.

Breakfast at Chez Celine – French Bakery Breakfast

Chez Celine is at the end of your walk at 34th and 5th Ave. This popular french bakery gets busy early so hit the ground walking and get a table before the 9 am rush starts. There are many breakfast items to choose from, our favorite being the omlettes, with a side of french breads. Their ginger mint lemoade will hit the spot (Celine lemonade) and start your day off right. Locals and visitors love this french bakery so take in the international flavor of Playa del Carmen.

Take a mini Mayan adventure down the coast

We have a particular fondness for Mayan Ruins and we love hopping on a public collectivo (public vans) and make a quick visit to the Xel Ha Ruins. Many visitors love their full day excursions at Coba or Chichen Itza but what many do not know is that there is a great trip just 30 minutes down the road to a wonderful Mayan Ruin site, Xel Ha. We walk to the collectivo pick up point at 2nd street and 15th Ave,  hop on a collectivo and enjoy the ride south. The driver drops us at the entrance to the Xel Ha ruins and we are ready for a 90 tour through this small but interesting Mayan settlement. To get back to Playa, we hop back on the collectivo and arrive back to Playa del Carmen in 30 minutes. Yah, we have seen a great ruin site and still have the afternoon to enjoy the beach and the Caribbean Sea!

SUP Boarding and Beach Time on Playa’s North Beach

We decided that SUP Boarding was a great way to cool off and see the Caribbean. We rented our boards from Cyan Ha Dive Shop on the north Beach in Las Palapas, hopped ont eh boards and off we went! The sea was calm, the fish were out and we paddled between Coco Beach and the Ferry pier. Time for a rest and Canibal Royal was call ing our name. What a great way to spend an afternoon on the beach and we even ran into some friends having lunch at Canibal Royal!

Happy Hour at the Dirty Martini

Luckily we were in Playa del Carmen on a Tuesday, so after a quick shower we headed to the Dirty Martini for their 2 for 1 Martinis. This locally run and loved bar is on 1st Ave between 10th and 12th street and it was busy. Old friend and new friends gathered for Greco’s martinis. What a great way to spend the early evening! The Dirty Martini always has a great happy hour so pop by any day during the week! Tuesdays is 2 for 1 martinis but Greco has other specials throughout the week!

Evenings in Playa del Carmen – So much to do so little time

Playa del Carmen is known for its incredible nightlife. We are not late nighters but if you are don’t let our early to bed ideas stop you from going out later than we like! Our dinner on our Perfect Day was at La Perla on 34th street for some great Oaxacan food. This is a small and new restaurant that has a great selection of mezcal but more importantly, authentic Oaxacan food that we love! The staff is great fun and the bar seems to have quite a few regulars. Try out something new and enjoy a true taste of Mexico.

Wow what a day! It was the Perfect Day for us and hope that you enjoy this Perfect Day. There are many more Perfect Days in Playa del Carmen filled with more water sports, yoga, food, drinks and more! But this Perfect Day hit the spot! Enjoy!
