When you think of the Riviera Maya, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and maybe even Tulum comes to mind. But there is a small fishing village that is easily forgotten in this line up of great cities that is quickly grabbing the attention of visitors. This fishing town is called Puerto Morelos and it is located only 20 minutes south of Cancun, and 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. Whether you decide to stay at any of the quaint hotels or houses in this small village, or take a day trip to experience their chill lifestyle, Puerto Morelos is worth it. February 13th is a great day to visit Puerto Morelos as their Bi-annual art market will be featured this day. Get to know some of the local vendors and pick up some gifts with local flavor.
Local food and art markets have become more popular in the Riviera Maya. People want fresh, local produce and products. The marketplace also provides a social atmosphere to meet people that are interested in a more healthy lifestyle or want to support local vendors. Local Markets are drawing a repeat crowd that gives the feeling of belonging. Newcomers and visitors feel welcomed and add to the family atmosphere. This regularity of attendance creates a feeling of support and community that emphasizes a small town feeling even when held in bigger cities.
Puerto Morelos is a diverse community with a small town feel. The market provides an venue for everyone to meet up, support each other and check out local artisans latest creations. It is a perfect place for visitors to come and feel part of a community and pick up some locally made souvenirs.
This small market held at Casa Caribe has over 30 vendors. Check out locally made jewelry, shoes, bags, beauty products, food, furniture, spices and salsas. To make this even more interesting have lunch or a snack at local food trucks out front.
The first Art market held in December 2015 for Christmas was such a success, the village of Puerto Morelos has decided to host another one for Valentine’s Day. The next market is February 13, 2016 from 11am to 5pm – Valentine’s edition at Casa Caribe. Look out for other pop up markets in the town on February 13th. You just may find some interesting surprises at local shops and restaurants on this day as well. It’s a great day to spend with family and getting to know the locals and their stories.
