Traveling with kids is another adventure altogether. There is a delicate line between being able to do the adult things while keeping the kids occupied, happy and, hopefully, a bit tired too. When visiting the Playa del Carmen area, there is a beautiful, natural park hidden away in the Ejido called Parque La Ceiba, that is a joy not just for the kids but also for the adults.
The park itself is one beautiful block of natural trees with different activity areas. The park is named after the sacred tree of the Maya, called La Ceiba. This tree can grow to enormous size and is recognized by the thorns on it’s trunk. They are the center of Mayan legends and can be found sprinkled all over the park. There is a play area with swings and see-saws for the kids. There are pathways through the larger natural area through the trees. The park is home to a library, yoga studio, recycling center, restaurant and an area for shows.
You won’t go hungry if you choose to visit because Parque La Ceiba has it’s very own restaurant. You can find traditional Mexican cuisine with economic prices. Try their natural juices and waters too made with local fruits. Be sure to stop by on Fridays for “Viernes Tamalero” which is Tamale Friday. Parents can enjoy their cafe de olla, a traditional coffee. The hours for the restaurant are Tuesday through Saturday 9am-8pm, 9am-5pm on Sundays, and is closed Monday.
Fridays seem to be a big day at Parque La Ceiba. A 6 pm they have their Club de Lectura or reading club. At 8 pm there is the Club de Cine or movie club.
Various classes can be found at the park as well for adults and kids. They have a beautiful yoga space that offers classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:15 am – 11:20 am. Aerial dance or silk classes for kids are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm.
The third Saturday of every month there is a “tianguis” or flea market. This includes different vendors selling their items, a recycling program for locals, and different shows including and aerial dance show at 3 pm, which is performed from a giant Ceiba tree.
Seasonal activities are always going on for special occasions. Classes and shows are always being added so it’s a good idea to check out their Facebook page or go by to see what is new on their schedule. Parque La Ceiba is located at Avenue 1 with Sur Diagonal 60 in the Ejido, which is the area on the western side of Highway 307.
