When visiting the Riviera Maya, there is a wonderful selection of activities and opportunities for children. Eco Parks, cenotes, and snorkeling are the usual activities for families but what about a class or workshop just for the kids? Playa del Carmen has a cool workshop for kids ‘Aerial Dance’ that does not require an ongoing commitment. Your kids can try it once during vacation, or can try a few classes during your stay.
My kids heard about the small aerial dance school, Aerofobia, and I wanted to see what a school of “telas”, as it is known in Spanish, was all about. Seeing long, colorful material drop gracefully from high in a large Ceiba tree definitely got my attention. Aerofobia, the name of the company that offers Aerial Dance classes, is located in Parque La Ceiba, a small, natural park in Playa del Carmen. The teacher, Alehandra, is great with children of all ages, specifically the 3 to 12 year olds. Watching the kids scurry up to the top of the material to do a graceful aerial dance is impressive. I can only imagine myself up there, tying myself into knots, to end up hanging not so elegantly from my foot upside down begging for help to get down. But these kids make it look so easy and they love it!
You may or may not have come across aerial dance at home. What I have always loved about traveling is that you cross paths with different experiences and activities you might not have ventured to try at home. Aerial dance is not something that I knew about in the United States. It is a combination of elegance, strength and focus. Do not expect a graceful beginning in the first class. Do anticipate having your kids try something new that works both their body and mind in ways it may not have before. And kids love to do that! Kids also seem to make this look so easy.
If your kids like their first classes in Playa del Carmen, they may want to enroll in classes at home. Aerial dance unites acrobacia, strength, and equilibrium which is fabulous for a child’s developing body. This weightless dance teaches kids about how their body works and how strength and flexibility is helpful for their daily routines. The great thing about silks is that there are no limits. the only limits are your personal limits, and kids love to explore personal limits.
While trying out the aerial dance classes in Playa, your kids get to meet kids from all over the world. Both visitors and locals attend the classes. Before their class or after their class they can enjoy other Parque La Ceiba activities like a library and play area. If one of your children would like to try the class and others do not, it is easy to split up the kids and have them do what they want to do.
If you would like to see aerial dance performances before bringing your kids to a class, Aerofobia hosts shows every third Saturday at Parque La Ceiba at 3 pm.
Aerofobia is lead by Alehandra Hernandez who conducts classes for children as well as adults at Parque La Ceiba. Individual classes cost $50 pesos per class.
