January Events in the Riviera Maya – Add value to your Vacation

Happy New Year to all! We are so happy that part of your New Year plan is a vacation in the Riviera Maya! What a great way to start off the new year! 2015 is jammed with great activities both on and off the beach, so get ready for a list of events that are scheduled for January 2015.

If you are new to the Riviera Maya, let us fill you in an a secret. Many local events are not highly publicized, with many of us finding out the day the event is happening. This is part of the Riviera Maya charm, and something that we are used to! This list of events is what we know about now, but by no means is it complete. So our secret is shared. Social Media has helped a great deal in the event news area, but it is still not perfect. Follow us on @locogringocom for more updates while you are here.

If you know of an event in one of the towns or villages in the area, let us all know! Our intention is to share major events of the month here, as there is always a party, a plan, something going on somewhere. You will be hard pressed to be bored in the Riviera Maya due to so many things going on up and down the coast.

January 2015 Riviera Maya Events

New Year’s Day – January 1 – Up and down the coast New Year’s celebrations will continue well into January 2. Big beach buffets can be found at many of the local beach clubs in the Riviera Maya, including evening specials at local restaurants. The big bash is December 31, but you will continue to be entertained throughout the week.

WinterBeach – First week of January – Playa del Carmen – WinterBeach is an annual fashion/music event held at Mamita’s Beach Club. This fashionista-music festival highlights Mexican fashion designers alongside local and national music talent from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mamita’s Beach is located at 26th Street and the beach in Playa del Carmen.

El Dia de los Reyes – January 6 – Playa del Carmen – Playa del Carmen puts out the largest Rosca de Reyes ring on 5th Ave as a fundraiser for a local charity. Starting at 7 pm you can purchase one piece of the largest Sweet bread ring found in Mexico. We don’t know what happens if you get the Baby Jesus in your piece, but I am sure the heavens will strike if you are the lucky one. The event is from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. or until the sweet bread is gone! Location is Playa del Carmen on 5th Avenue usually starting at Constituyentes and 5th.

Bravest Race @ Xplor – End of January – Xplor Park just south of Playa del Carmen – Test your physical and endurance skills. This biannual event is a blast and a great way to start off the new year. The race is a jungle obstacle course that takes you swimming through cenotes, jumping off small cliffs into fresh water, climbing rope ladders and jungle trees. Get a team together for this 5 km race that will have you done by lunch and out on the beach feeling pretty proud of yourself for taking on the rugged terrain of the Mayan jungle and cenotes.

Daily Events in Riviera Maya Cities and Towns

Daily events still rock the coast during these January special events. Akumal has their Farmers Market each Wednesday and Saturday, Playa del Carmen has organic markets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays. Local restaurants have comedy nights, evening drink specials, Fixe Prix menus and more! Ask around within your location for the cool event of the day so that you can be in the know about local events in the Riviera Maya.
