Holbox Island – The Perfect Romantic Trip

Hammock Holbox

If you haven´t decided yet your next accommodation in Riviera Maya for your holidays, we might have the perfect spot for you. Holbox island is the perfect place to spend a few days. Even if you are looking for a romantic weekend or a relaxing week, the island has everything you can possibly need. Not as crowded as the rest of places in Mexican Caribbean, Holbox island represent one of the best off the beaten track options.

Places Of Interest

Punta Cocos Holbox

The sandy streets of Holbox island lead to really nice places. It looks like a little town and it has a small plaza and a market right in the heart of the island. Right across the plaza there is an 80´s theme restaurant with great burgers. On the main road on your left side there is a folk restaurant with authentic meals and live music in the afternoons. At night it looks like a whole different place; the bars with hip music, the main park with food stands and lots of people chatting and dancing. The main beach is in walking distance from the ferry station but you can also take one of the local cabs. The cabs are not the regular cabs you take in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. These are actually ATV vehicles due to the sandy streets and bumpy roads.

We highly recommend you a visit to Punta Cocos or Playa Cocos, visitors get to have the beach for themselves around 8:00am or 9:00am with incredible views. The water is crystal clear with light blue colors on the shore and bright blue colors in deep areas. This island is one of the few places where you can actually see the sun hiding behind the ocean. The little market in town offers fresh and local fruits, veggies and authentic fast food for early birds. There is also a boat trip that will take you discover another hidden gem in Holbox wich is another islands; Isla Pasión and Isla Pájaros.

Lodging And Camping

There are a few nice hotels in Holbox island but we highly recommend you to book Mawimbi Hotel which offer great service and it is in walking distance to everything! From there you can walk to the main beach or even to Punta Cocos. And the little plaza, restaurants and market are just down the main road. If you need something cheaper we suggest you the camping area on the main road, just one kilometer from the Ferry station. Camping can be cheap, just keep in mind that your belongings must be secured in a locker and bring lots of bugs spray for the evenings. There are only two places with camping tents for rent and they usually get busy. If you are unsure about which lodging option is best for you, let us know and we will happily assist you with tips and reservations.

Transportation To Holbox

If you are traveling from Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Puerto Morelos, it is best to take an ADO public bus to Chiquilá. The port of Chiquilá is the closest to Holbox and it is also the cheapest way to get to the island. The ADO bus departs from Playa del Carmen or Cancun and we highly recommend you to book in advance on-line or visit the ADO bus station and purchase your tickets to Chiquilá a fe ays in advance to guarantee availability. There are also 2 collectivos (public vans) from Playa del Carmen to Chiquilá port. Once at Chiquilá you would have to take a boat of a ferry to cross to the island. They depart every hour and rate is around $450.00 pesos per person one way.

Holbox island is perfect for day trips but there are a lot of beautiful areas to see that it is best to stay for the weekend or stay the whole week. If you are planning on taking the tour to Isla Pájaros and Isla Pasión (which is totally worth it), we suggest you to stay at least two days. This way you will spend the second day checking the shops and restaurants with great authentic food. As an extra note, the island is the perfect paradise for dog lovers. Most of the places are pet friendly and you will find lots of furry friends on your way.
