Eco Friendly Activities For Mindful Travelers

Eco friendly snorkeling

Holidays can be really fun when you decide to explore new options that might not be as touristic as the rest. We love welcoming travelers who are now more focused on Eco friendly activities and like to design their own vacation. If you decide to go for activities that are not as common, you will discovered a whole new world. We are definitely supporting activities that are provided by locals and that help us maintain the beauty of Riviera Maya. Choosing these kind of activities can make the whole difference and will give you a closer look into the local culture. For example animal friendly activities guarantee the preservation of natural flora and fauna of this area. Relaxation and entertainment are not separated from animal conservation. We have gathered some of the main activities you can enjoy that are guilty free and reduce environmental impact.

Swim With Turtles

Turtles, Mexico

Akumal is the most famous area for swimming with turtle activities. The Akumal Bay is full of these beautiful creatures and others like stingrays and big fish. Snorkeling in this area is probably one of the cheapest and most practical activities. You don´t need that much to spend a wonderful time and get to see the incredible marine life. Anybody can rent snorkel gear at local dive shops or bring their own. There is no need to swim away from the Bay to see the marine life but if you prefer you can book a boat tour to take you exploring the reefs off the Bay. We highly recommend Akumal Dive Shop and Akumal Dive Center for this activity.

In addition to swimming with turtles you can also witness sea turtle hatchings. Riviera Maya beaches are well known for hosting turtle nests all year around. From May to November or December the turtles hatch and volunteers are always welcome to participate. Some of the areas where you can see turtle nests and join the turtle hatchings are; Akumal, Bahia Principe and Xcacel beach. This activity is completely FREE it just takes a little luck to be part of it.

Eco Friendly Monkey Business

Akumal Monkey Sanctuary

For the monkey lovers who are against seeing them caged or with a leash, there are especial sanctuaries that you can visit. The monkeys that live in sanctuaries have been rescued from an animal abuse situation or taken away from circuses. The sanctuaries provide care, food and rehabilitation to help them live again in their natural habitat. Punta Laguna is the house for spider monkeys and hauling monkeys of all sizes. They hang from the trees and live freely in the jungle while the caretakers plant fruit trees so they can feed. Akumal Monkey Sanctuary and The Jungle Place are also perfect for visiting monkeys who have been rescued. They accept and appreciate donations to help them with medical expenses and food for the monkeys.

Free Whale Sharks Vs Dolphins In Captivity

Instead of spending barely 10 minutes with dolphins on an expensive tour where they remain captive, we recommend swimming with whale sharks. It is not as scary and dangerous as it sounds. These incredibly huge sharks are the kindest of all the marine life. They feed on plankton and move really slow in the ocean. You cannot touch them or dive with them but during the snorkeling activity you get to swim by their side which is an unforgettable experience. The activity allows you to know them without having to pay to keep them in captivity because it is you who visit their “home”. After the activity is done they remain free in their natural habitat and you go back to your vacation place knowing you didn´t pay to keep them caged. The swimming with whale sharks is a seasonal activity that starts in June and ends in the middle of September. We are basically at the beginning of whale shark season for this year, so it is the perfect time to request information about the activity and get a quote.

There are of course many more activities like snorkeling in cenotes, community tours and others that are not as touristic as the rest. If you are a mindful traveler and enjoy spending time participating in eco-friendly activities, let us provide you with all the options closer to your vacation home. Your next adventure could be one e-mail away from you!
