Local Shopping – Best Markets In Riviera Maya

Food Market

If you are a shopping lover just like us and are always looking for authentic local products, this is golden information for you. Local or community markets represent affordable options and we have collected important details on the best ones in Riviera Maya. Markets are great for unique handcraft, authentic homemade food and exotic items. Most of them offer helpful information about local activities and events that you can join during your holidays. They usually are located far from the touristy places, so you can find good opportunities to improve your Spanish and make some new local friends as well.

Mayakoba Farmer´s Market

Mayakoba Market

This is one of the most popular markets in the area, known by travelers and locals. Looking to promote local products and support vendors that often offer healthy and organic options. The ambience of Mayakobá Farmer´s Market reminds a friendly neighborhood and you will enjoy the afternoons with live music and activities for kids. It is organized at least once a month and is located inside Mayakobá resort at El Pueblito Mayakobá. The schedule is from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

Kava Kasa Market

Kava Kasa Market

This community market welcomes expat vendors as well and has a wide variety in organic products. One of the highlights that this market has is the Yoga lessons that are scheduled during the morning. It is a daily donation-based local market organized every week. We cannot forget mentioning the exquisite homemade bread by Sue Cole, vegan tamales and beauty products you will find here. You can join Kava Kasa every Tuesday from 9am to 2pm. On 22nd street between 5th and 10th Avenues.

Coco Beach Eco Market

Coco Beach Market

At this moment the market is on a summer break but is the favorite most popular one in Playa del Carmen. Known by offering vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and organic items. Jewelry and clothes at affordable prices and beauty options too. Coco Beach Eco Market will be back on October 7th with more vendors and products. Their schedule is on Fridays from 9 to 11 AM at Alizes Playa on 46th street between Flamingos and Cozumel streets, close to the beach.

Tips To Success At Local Market Shopping:

  • Bring a large bag for your purchases to avoid using plastic, or buy a large fabric bag at the market (that later can be used as a souvenir).
  • Bring cash and preferably pesos instead of dollars. The exchange rate is convenient for you and it will be less expensive. Most of the market stands do not take credit cards.
  • Early birds get the best stuff. If you arrive early, first explore all the area so you can have an idea of the items you want to buy.
  • Locate the bathroom and food areas.
  • Wear comfortable shoes/sandals and clothes. It is also good idea to bring shades and a hat.
  • Spread the word. Bring a friend, your spouse or your teenager kids. There is always something interesting for them to purchase.

As an extra tip, we would like to recommend the Co´ox event in Cancun organized by 15 different organizations. Co´ox Cancun happens the second Sunday of each month. Promotes family cultural activities like bike rides, music shows, yoga lessons and local community markets. It also supports local vendors, helping them to offer their products which include; food, handcraft and clothes. The upcoming Co´ox event will be this Sunday June 26th.
