If there is an area that offers modern services without giving up the hippie ambiance, it is the south part of Riviera Maya. Of all of the magic spots we recommend to our travelers, Tulum is definitely our favorite. It has recently gained popularity and not only from locals but also from celebrities. Looks like Tulum has a lot more to offer than just chic hotels and restaurants. The Eco-Friendly vibe, the friendly people and natural beauty keep us coming back every time. And travelers cannot get enough of this incredible town.
Tulum is more than just stunning beaches, there are many activities you can join during your visit to this magical town. Playa Paraiso is one of the top beaches to spend a relaxed afternoon. But if you are interested in paddle boarding and Kite surfing we highly recommend you COA watersports and Extreme Control. Both based in Tulum and experts when it comes to paddle boarding in the ocean and at nearby cenotes. If your preference is more for diving and snorkeling, Mexidivers is located right on the middle of Tulum beach road. They offer personalized service and a boat tours that take you to discover amazing reefs with unique marine life. And if you are a jungle junkie like we are, Tulum Bike tours will definitely amaze you. In addition to this, the list of cenotes is infinite. Only a few kilometers after passing Tulum town you will find Cenote Dos Osos. This cenote is not very popular but it´s perfect for afternoon visits because is not as crowded as the rest of cenotes.
If you come to Tulum and you don´t try the authentic food is offered at restaurants, is like if you didn´t come at all. The best restaurants are based in Tulum. From authentic meals to gluten-free, to vegan options, there are many to choose from!. Usually the location determinates the rate, the most expensive restaurants are on the Beach Side. Hartwood, Gitano, Arca, Restaurare and Kitchen Table are our favorite. The ones located in Tulum town include more affordable options but are equally delicious and authentic. Places like; El Camello Jr, La Piola and Antojitos La Chiapaneca keep us drooling every time we visit Tulum main avenue. *As an extra tip, you can find the best snacks at the municipality park and by the ADO station. There are vendors who offer sweet marquesitas, cups with corn, cheese and cream, fresh cut mangos and Chicharrones with spicy sauce.
One of the highlights in Tulum is the ecofriendly transportation; bicycles. You can easily explore the whole town by renting a bike. There is a special bike route that takes you from town to the beach side and all the way to Sian Kaan reserve. Bikes are around $150.00 pesos per day and you only need an ID to secure the rental. If you opt for a less ecofriendly option of transportation, there are also public cabs everywhere. These cabs are working 24/7 and there is a special number displayed on the back of each cab to call them if you need one after hours. The transportation King in Tulum would be collectivos, public vans that take you from Carrillo Puerto or Playa del Carmen. There are stops on Tulum main avenue where you can wait for collectivos to pick you up and take you back to Playa if you need it. This is probably the most affordable transportation option. The only thing is that Collectivos only run from 5:00am until 10:00pm every day.
