A Sweet Spot in Playa – Das Brot Bakery

Das Brot Bakery in Playa del Carmen

There is nothing sweeter than to know how one of Playa’s favorite businesses came to be. The beautiful thing about Playa del Carmen is that there are still so many local businesses. Das Brot Bakery (“The Bread” in German) has a lovely story and evolution to where it is today. It’s German twist gives it a signature flair that has many becoming fans of this yummy, but also, healthy store of goodies. It is not something you want to miss on your vacation.

Meet Anja – Founder of Das Brot

Das Brot Bakery in Playa del Carmen

Anja, a German-born ex-pat, started baking vegan bread for the store and coffee shop at her daughter, Luna’s Waldorf school in Cuernavaca. Little did she know the impact that this would have on her future. Once she moved to Playa, Luna’s school would have a small market and Anja would bring her Strudel and other goodies which immediately were loved by students and parents alike. This lead to a Facebook page called THE BAKERY.

The Inspiration

Even the page, THE BAKERY, has an interesting background. Anja was inspired by the movie “It’s Complicated” with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. In the movie, there was an amazing bakery and home and this fueled the fire in Anja’s heart to create her own bakery even though she knew it was going to be a hard road ahead.
