On vacation, sometimes parents look for something new for their kids to try. Jiu Jitsu is a good option when traveling to Playa del Carmen. Not only is it one of the fastest growing sports in the world, it has such a history and culture that come along with the physical and mental benefits. Jiu Jitsu is just another treasure I have encountered while living here in Playa del Carmen. For those of you traveling with children, Jiu Jitsu may be something to introduce your kids to while here in the Riviera Maya, especially if you travel here often or stay for extended periods. Even just a short vacation here is enough time to learn more about the popular world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ.
It is great for kids to meet people their own age while expending some pent up energy and also learning about another culture. For them, it’s a way to interact with others while also learning to be present on the mat while respecting your competitor. It’s a great way to learn a new skill in a fun but different way and what better time to do this than when you are visiting a foreign country?
BJJ also has psychological and mental benefits. It is a tactful sport where you need to know your opponent’s every move so you can counteract it. It is similar to chess in that it stimulates you to be always thinking one move ahead of the other person. It sounds advanced, but this is great for kids to learn this at an early age so that it becomes second nature. The classes at Gracie Barra Playa del Carmen are fun and have kids of different ages. There are different classes each day and as a visitor to the area, your child can pick and choose which ones they would like to try.
Professor Gibran Alvarez, Association BJJ of Quintana Roo Director is the owner and main professor at Gracie Barra Riviera Maya. He oversees and also shows kids the importance of respect on and off the mat. He points out the commonalities of BJJ with meditation, “after training with your partner, you get exhausted to the point that you are meditating so deeply that you feel happiness in your soul.”
Gibran has a wonderful team of professors, such as Lee and Juan, who help to broaden the spectrum of types of classes from not just BJJ but also Muay Thai and Judo. The classes are everyday Monday thru Friday from 6 pm to 7 pm. Muay Thai is offered on Monday, Judo Tuesdays and Thursdays and Jiu Jitsu on Wednesdays and Fridays. You have your choice of choosing particular classes or buying a week at a discounted rate. Single classes cost $15 USD or a five day week costs $50 USD.
So if you are here for an extended period of time, come often or find yourself here in bad weather, you will have an opportunity to bring your kids to Gracie Barra Playa del Carmen to try some classes and introduce them to some peers. If your child already practices Jiu Jitsu, this is a great opportunity for them to extend their martial arts family internationally. And if they do not, what a great way to meet local kids that will become friends for your future visits.
Gracie Barra is located on Avenida Constituyentes and Avenida 95 on the Ejido on the west side of Playa.
