Paamul Weekly Eco-Market – A Hidden Treasure

Paamul Eco Market south of Playa del Carmen

In recent weeks, we have covered some of the local markets that are part of your Riviera Maya experience. For vistors, local markets are a wonderful way to take a peek into local communities and meet residents who call the Riviera Maya home. The bonus and main reason to visit the markets it to buy homemade foods and check out locally made crafts. The Paamul Market is off the beaten track making it a great excursion just minutes from any Riviera Maya city.

Paamul is a small community just south of Playa del Carmen. You probably would not stumble across it if you were not looking for it. It is a community of retired expats, many escaping the cold weather. You will feel the community spirit in the beachfront town. Their weekly market is every Thursday from 9 am to 11 am. The market was founded by local resident, Leslie Early.

Local Paamul Resident, Susie “Q. Roo” Washam, describes their weekly market as this, “As residents of Paamul, we feel very fortunate to be able to take a short walk to our community center/church every Thursday morning to sample and purchase the goodies made by local bakers, cooks, artisans, growers, and other creative folks who bring their internationally-inspired items to the market! In addition to the fresh produce, we especially enjoy the homemade Italian sausages and sauces, and the gluten-free treats. We like to sample something different every week. There are also beautiful crafts and jewelry. We love the live music presented each week, as well.”

The market brings together residents, families, and visitors. Kids, families and single travelers are welcome to join in the fun. Pick up souvenirs for the family or stock up on food for your villa or condo rental. Your purchases will help the local community and get you out and about in different Riviera Maya areas. Just be careful, they may talk you into staying!

We would like to thank Susie “Q. Roo” Washam for her photos of the Paamul Market. You rock Susie!
